The Malaysiakini Internship Programme is aimed at attracting blossoming young talent to keep the country’s longest-running online news portal ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving media landscape. While we at Malaysiakini will make it our responsibility to ensure you experience a highly structured learning environment during your internship, we also value your ideas to meet the challenges posed by the post-truth media environment and keep reporting independent, relevant and cutting edge. The programme aims to fully integrate those who can adapt to Malaysiakini ’s mission and culture. Not everyone will make the cut, but we will do our best to ensure that the learning experience that you gain will prepare you for employment in this exciting and exacting industry. Eligibility: The Malaysiakini Internship Programme is open to undergraduates currently enrolled in their final year of study. Graduate students are also welcome to apply. I first came here as an inexperienced teenager, never having worked a day in my life, wondering if I could really be of any use to the company. I quickly realized that the transition from student to working adult was a pretty big leap. The people I worked with, of course, made the job a lot easier. My colleagues were very easy to get along with and always gave proper guidance even if I asked what I thought were stupid questions. It really is the perfect spot to land on when you jump from being a student to a working adult and will undoubtedly, give you exactly the experience you were looking for. It was a great opportunity to report on various news and I was proud to see the reports that I had written. Going to various events and press conferences throughout my internship gave me an opportunity to view Malaysia through a different lens. The people there are friendly and having editor-in-chief Steven Gan taking time off his schedule to have a personal chat with me before I left is something I feel more employers should do with interns. My colleagues also gave me the necessary guidance and were willing to teach me, which was what I needed since I was relatively unfamiliar with the field of journalism. Working in Malaysiakini gave me a thrilling and rewarding experience. It is undoubtedly the best choice so far I made to enrich my profile. The most amazing part is the acquisition of thousands of meaningful working experiences which are mainly related to the field of video editing, videography, news broadcasting and media production. It widened my horizon on news reporting and journalism. In addition, it expanded my knowledge about the political and social environment in Malaysia and globally. Nevertheless, without the unconditional assistance and kind advice from all the colleagues I collaborated with, I would not be able to gain a wide range of useful experiences and insights. Working with them enhanced my interpersonal network and, most importantly, inspired me to strive harder to be as professional and efficient as them. Susan Wong June 2016 In Malaysiakini, if you are willing to put in the effort, the people around you regard you as family, not just another colleague. In the space of 3 months, I did research, created content for the education site, jumped onto the Pokemon Go bandwagon, developed ideas for campaigns, was heavily involved in a marketing campaign with one of the largest smartphone manufacturers, and organised an education forum at Sunway International School. The level of responsibility offered was not limited to your ‘status’ as an intern, but to your ability to apply the required effort. The different personalities that I interacted with inspired and imparted stories and life lessons; this was what made my experience with Malaysiakini so rich. Everyone at Malaysiakini is used to performing above expectations and each one of them has a great passion for the work they do. Finally, I would be profoundly surprised to find a company that is more rooted in its values of ethics than Malaysiakini. I have grown immensely from witnessing and debating the conflicts between the metrics of business and the values being upheld. They hired me at the end. Daniel Lau August 2016 For the past three months, I have been Malaysiakini’s first intern who had an academic background in photography. In Malaysiakini, I was taught how to work fast, as I had to provide a variety of pictures for all three news desks (English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese). Thanks to Malaysiakini, I gained a lot of experience and knowledge by covering a variety of stories including news, entertainment, sports, et cetera. I also had the chance to enhance my photography skills, and I would like to personally thank former Malaysiakini news photographer Nazir Sufari @ Wak and news photographer Lim Huey Teng for sharing their knowledge and everything about the news photography world. Syukri Ariffin September 2017 I spent two months in Malaysiakini completing my internship, a precious experience which allowed me to understand how an online media organisation operates. I was impressed by the working environment in Malaysiakini, which is comfortable and democratic. The colleagues that I met and worked with personally were undeniably friendly and willing to provide assistance whenever I needed it. Each news story which I was assigned to cover gave me the opportunity to update myself with current issues. I was honoured to be able to meet prominent leaders in person and have short discussions with them during my internship. The editorial group which I was placed with also encouraged me to write a special report on Chinese dialects. This report gave me the chance to put into practice the knowledge and skills I attained as a Chinese Studies student in linguistics and Chinese cultural studies. In a nutshell, it was a golden opportunity for me to discover for myself the rush of excitement one could only experience as a journalist in Malaysiakini. CY Lee July 2017 I was truly surprised when Malaysiakini actually allowed me to intern with them for four months, given the fact that I had just completed my SPM, and I was 17! I wanted to do something worthwhile during those few months after my exams and I had always wanted to dive into the world of journalism, and well, here I was. The first few days were indeed challenging, I pretty much had zero knowledge on how to write ‘news’, but well, I really have to thank the wonderful editors who have indeed been very patient with me throughout my journey. It was really wonderful working with them, getting the opportunity to meet very reputable and inspiring individuals and it was a constant learning experience for me, a beautiful learning experience!
